Monday is laundry day. For as much as I embrace the role of motherhood/wifehood/self-declared home economist, I really hate doing laundry. It never ends, especially with my snot-covered, drool-covered, dirt-covered, food-covered, sometimes poop-covered boys.
Yesterday I dutifully went downstairs to transfer the first load of clothes from the washer to the dryer. My brow furrowed as I opened the washer lid. “What is that?” I said to myself. And yes, I said it out loud. I talk to myself a lot. You really can’t blame me since most of my conversations are with people under the age of three. Ironically, it helps me feel more sane. But I digress.
I pulled out the top shirt and put it on the floor. It would need to be washed again.
“What IS that?” I said again. I repeated the throwing-item-on-the-floor bit.
“What IS THAT?” Repeat throwing.
:”WHAT IS THAT?” Repeat.
“WHAT IS THAT????!!!!!”
All out loud of course.
You would have a similar reaction if your recently washed laundry looked like this:
Hundreds, perhaps thousands of slimy, sticky, gelatinous beads covered everything. Most of the clothes on the floor were Marc’s, so I automatically blamed him. What did he leave in his pocket? Was it his asthma medication? I rummaged through the pockets on his fleece jacket. Nothing. I kept digging and digging–wet clothes were all over the floor.
Finally I found the culprit. A diaper (not poopy, thank goodness).
Apparently super-absorbency only goes so far.
So today’s tip is to never ever put a disposable diaper in the washing machine. Your laundry will be attacked by millions of little glob monster babies. Fortunately, it all came out with the next wash cycle. And for the first time, I’m actually feeling motivated to look more into cloth diapers (maybe for my next child, whenever that happens). Seriously, what the heck have my kids been wearing every day?
What have you put through the wash that you wish you hadn’t? Please enlighten me, for I am domestically challenged. Other mistakes I’ve made:
- Chapstick/lip gloss/any kind of makeup
- Velcro and lace in the same load
Have a good week! May your laundry be cleaner than mine.
